Introduction to the Arts & Entertainment Industry:



Jolt strongly believes that every student should have at least one course about the standards in our industry; whether it's film, video, broadcast, viral, shorts, digital, VFX, or animation.



The creative/production industry has a very extensive past and one of the most important aspects that cross all mediums are professional standards and guidelines. These standards are for all artists around the world to understand as we try to keep our industry consistent.

Consistency helps with communication and with great communication you end up with great results.



CLASS 1: The Three Phases



Pre-Production, Production/Principle Photography & Post Production



CLASS 2:  The Industry Titles



Students will learn about all the various jobs and the proper titles in the Film & Video Industry.  This will open their mind to possible career choices as well as making them set savvy when communicating to industry professionals. As technology grows, new list of positions are available for those who qualifies.


CLASS 3: Introduction to the Creative Project



Students will be introduced to ideas, inspiration, and unique ways to complete a project.



CLASS 4: Project Briefing



Students will learn about the PSA challenge. A Creative Director from a top Ad Agency will brief the students about the Nonprofit they will be working for and about the message they need to convey in their PSA.



Q&A: 1HR



Before the day ends, students will have a chance to ask questions about their classes or the upcoming PSA CHALLENGE.



SUNDAY JUNE 9:                  LOCATION: TAMPA BAY WaVE

Creative Brainstorming:



Coming up with ideas can be very stressful. But, with our project brief students should have a head start with ideas. Jolt's goal is to help them stay on track with the challenge, a basic script/concept will be provided by the agency. Students are to add their "flavor" to the project and make it their own, the agencies' brief is just a a foundation.


CLASS 1: Introduction to Digital Media



Our industry changes every year, new technologies are always up and coming. As a professional in the Film & Video industry, students must understand the standard fundamentals of a Digital Media and the now plethora of different codecs and formats that are being used.


CLASS 2: Principles of Graphics & Animation



Students will learn and get a demonstration on how to incorporate graphics, motionography, and other animated elements into a final piece.  Students will also learn how to communicate the final animation to the client utilizing Pre-Vis comps and mood boards.



CLASS 3:  Commercial Writing



Students will learn the format in TV / Commercial writing. Learning the correct techniques for writing a commercial is a crucial skill. Students must understand they are writing for broadcast and there is a duration limit; a 30SEC commercial will be produced and our students are required to write a 30SEC commercial. Writing in an AV format teaches proper communication and organization skills during a commercial production.


CLASS 4: Creating a Treatment



The key to winning the project is creating a solid and informative treatment. A treatment is a package of written ideas with maybe a handful of reference visuals. Our instructors will provide some examples and advice on how to create great treatment.

 

SATURDAY  JUNE 15:           MORNING CLASS          LOCATION: FIRST UNIT

Equipment & Gear:



The Film and Video industry has some of them most unique gear in the world. The goal for this weekend is to introduce our students to the standard equipment, gear, tools, lights, hardware and cameras needed to shoot a commercial.

 

CLASS 1: Lights, Grip and Production Gear



Students will join the Jolt team at First Unit. Here students will be introduced to the industry gear. Students will learn the proper ways to set a stand, rig a rig, prop a light, speak the right lingo, and set etiquette.


AFTERNOON CLASS                     LOCATION: CURTIS GRAHAM’S STUDIO



CLASS 2: The Camera and Cinematography



A hunter is only as good as his rifle. A brilliant cinematographer has the talent for composing and lighting a beautiful shot. However, in this day in age, a cinematographer needs to understand the fundamentals of various digital cameras and how each camera and set of lenses react differently in various settings. Students will learn why specific cameras and lenses are used for various productions.



CLASS 3: Lights, Camera, Rehearse

Students will witness a live set and production shoot. Jolt instructors will demonstrate a Red Epic build and how to light a scene. A practice before the production; the footage will be used during the editing class.

Note: At the end of the day students will hand in their production treatments. The treatments will be sent to the client for approval.  Production Groups will also start to be formed.

 

SUNDAY JUNE 16:                                                                         LOCATION: PP+K



9:00am to 7:00pm



Post Production:



Post Production in the Film & Video industry an industry in-itself. Post Production carries many different types of processes using visual and audio elements. Post Production is where the project comes together.



CLASS 1: Workflow



Knowing editing software has nothing to do with being a good artist or a professional. When working in the Post Production world, workflow is the key to success. Students will learn how to organize files and understand in detail what each department does in a Post Facility. Students will understand how to speak the language, correctly break down a project and how to higher the right person for the job.


CLASS 2: The First Cut



Students will learn what it takes to create an assemblage edit and why certain steps are taking before the creative edit begins.



CLASS 3: The Art of Coloring



Professionals consider coloring one of the most artistic processes of the entire production. Here students will learn about great colorists and why great coloring is an essential part of any story. 


CLASS 4: Sound



Audio (sound and music) is such a broad phase that cannot be taught in one sitting. Instead students will get tips on where and how to decide on music / sound fx / and how to finalize their audio; mixing.



Note: Students are required to use the upcoming week to create their production book which consists of their treatment, AV formatted script, shot list, PreVis (boards or digital), shooting schedule, crew list and call sheets.



Each group will also be notified about their shooting location. Two groups will assigned a studio shoot that will contain a huge White Cyc with tons of light and grip gear. The other two groups will be assigned a location shoot at a gorgeous facility that will contain a grip truck and a location grip and lighting package.


SATURDAY JUNE 21:                                                          LOCATION: THE BUZZ



9:00am to 5:00pm 



Review Day



The Jolt team will review the group’s production books. Every aspect of their production will be covered to ensure the groups are ready to film their PSA the following weekend.

Groups will be responsible for contacting Jolt instructors and scheduling a 2-hour time slot.


SATURDAY JUNE 29:                                                                LOCATION:   TBD



Production Weekend



This is the big weekend. Need we say more!



Group 1 and Group 2 will produce their PSAs at either of the two designated locations.  Each group will have access to professional lighting/grip gear, a RED Epic and prime lens package, a professional Cinematographer, Assistant Cameraman, Gaffer, and Production Assistants.

Jolt Team Leaders will be on site to assist each group.


SUNDAY JUNE 30:                                                                   LOCATION:   TBD



Production Weekend



Group 3 and Group 4 will produce their PSAs at either of the two designated locations.  Each group will have access to professional lighting/grip gear, a RED Epic and prime lens package, a professional Cinematographer, Assistant Cameraman, Gaffer, and Production Assistants.



Jolt Team Leaders will be on site to assist each group.



Note: Each group will have two weeks to edit their PSA. 



WEDNESDAY JULY 17:                                                 LOCATION: INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY



6:00pm - 10:00pm



Jolt will hold a screening night where all four PSAs will be played for the Client and Creative Director. An assessment of each PSA will be made at the end of the screening.
